Abstract
Twenty-nine patients undergoing craniotomy were studied in order to evaluate the blood loss during operation with and without the prophylactic administration of Botropase, Bothrops Jararaca venom extract, according to a double-blind schedule.
Intraoperative blood losses were evaluated by estimating the aspirated blood, the blood absorbed with gauzes.
As far as blood loss during operation is concerned, a very significant difference between treated and untreated patients was observed, regardless of the different schedules of drug administration and the different entities of diseases.
These objective results were also found significantly correlated to the "subjective" clinical judgement by the surgeons.
